Singapore-based ride-hailing and food delivery company Grab Holdings has officially acquired Foodpanda’s food delivery business in Taiwan for $600 million (approximately Rp 10 trillion), marking the company’s first expansion outside Southeast Asia.

This corporate move was announced directly by Grab on its official website on Monday (23/3/2026). The acquisition of Foodpanda also signifies Grab’s inaugural expansion beyond Southeast Asia.

“This acquisition marks Grab’s official entry into the Taiwan market, our ninth market of operations and the first outside Southeast Asia,” said Anthony Tan, CEO and co-founder of Grab, in an official statement.

He also noted that Taiwan has significant potential with a population of around 23 million and high demand for mobile-based services. The market in the country is considered similar to consumers in Southeast Asia.

Foodpanda is part of Delivery Hero, a German company operating food delivery services in more than 70 countries.

Grab explained that the acquisition agreement is still awaiting regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.

The company also targets the transaction process for users, merchant partners, and driver partners to its platform to be completed by early 2027.

This acquisition is expected to change the competitive landscape of food delivery services in Taiwan. Before this acquisition plan, the food delivery market in Taiwan was dominated by two main players: Foodpanda and Uber Eats.

Data shows that from 2022 to 2023, Foodpanda held about 52% market share, while Uber Eats had 48%.

At that time, Uber also planned to buy Foodpanda’s business in Taiwan. However, Taiwan’s competition authority regulators rejected the plan because it was deemed to potentially create too much market dominance.

If combined, Uber Eats and Foodpanda were estimated to control more than 90% of food delivery services in Taiwan. This situation was feared to reduce competition and lead to price increases for consumers.

Grab currently operates in eight Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam, with main services covering online transportation, food delivery, and digital financial services.

Grab explained that after the acquisition of Foodpanda is completed, the company’s service reach will be expanded to cover 21 cities in Taiwan.

Grab relies on artificial intelligence-based technology for delivery route optimisation, personalised food recommendations, and operational efficiency.

By combining Grab’s AI-based platform and Foodpanda’s extensive local network, this acquisition move is also seen as strengthening Grab’s position in the Taiwan market.

Based on industry data, Foodpanda’s business in Taiwan in 2025 recorded a gross merchandise value (GMS) of around $1.8 billion (approximately Rp 30 trillion) per year, as compiled by KompasTekno from Grab’s official website.

This value reflects the size of the food delivery market in Taiwan, which is considered mature in the Asian region.
