The development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the transportation and digital services sector continues to be a focus for various technology companies in Southeast Asia. The integration of AI is now directed not only towards improving user experience but also operational efficiency and productivity for on-the-ground partners, including drivers and small business operators.

In a presentation at the GrabX 2026 event in Jakarta on 8 April 2026, Grab’s Group CEO & Co-founder Anthony Tan explained the development of an AI assistant for driver partners designed to support their daily work activities. He directly highlighted the role of this technology in operations.

“I call it ‘Coach’ because that’s exactly its role,” he stated at the event in Jakarta on Wednesday, 8 April 2026.

Anthony Tan explained that this AI development approach focuses not only on technological aspects but also on affordability and accessibility for a wider user base. He emphasised that the utilisation of AI should not be limited to certain groups alone.

“We have a strong belief that the benefits of AI should not be limited only to those who know how to use it, and should not be enjoyed only by those who can afford it,” he clarified.

Furthermore, he highlighted the risk of a digital divide that could occur if AI adoption is uneven. According to him, current technological developments are already beginning to affect job competition and economic opportunities across various societal layers.

“This belief is increasingly strong and urgent because we live in a world where humans who do not utilise AI are very likely to be left behind. This is no longer just a dystopian future scenario, but a reality we must face today.”

In the context of implementation, Grab conveyed that AI technology is used to support operational systems such as trip monitoring, route planning, and service efficiency. The goal is to reduce unproductive time and increase the effectiveness of work for on-the-ground partners.

The company also highlighted the cost aspects in the development and use of AI. It affirmed the company’s approach to financing this technology remains widely accessible to users within its ecosystem.

“We bear the entire cost of using AI because we understand that good AI technology is indeed not cheap, but it should not be a luxury that can only be accessed by a handful of people.”
