The Government of Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, has prepared 18 villages to serve as pilot projects for the Reconciliation and Peace Village (Kampung REDAM) Programme, an initiative by the Ministry of Human Rights (KemenHAM) aimed at strengthening a culture of peace and respect for human rights at the community level.

Director of Human Rights Services at the Ministry of Human Rights, Osbin Samosir, stated that Gowa Regency has demonstrated a strong readiness to implement the programme through institutional strengthening and the direct involvement of the community in maintaining social harmony.

‘The Ministry of Human Rights continues to strengthen efforts to build a culture of peace and respect for human rights through the REDAM Village Programme. This programme receives full support from the Gowa Regency Government, which shares a aligned vision in creating security and social harmony,’ Osbin said in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

Osbin noted that the REDAM Village programme is designed not only to strengthen systems and institutions but also to build citizen participation in creating a peaceful, inclusive environment that respects human rights. He explained that the community’s role will be reinforced through the appointment of human rights activists who receive official legitimacy via a Decree of the Minister of Human Rights to ensure the programme’s sustainability at the grassroots level.

‘The community’s role will be strengthened through the appointment of human rights activists who have official legitimacy via a Minister of Human Rights Decree. This is important to ensure the sustainability of the movement at the grassroots level,’ he said.

Gowa Vice Regent Darmawangsyah Muin said the local government will establish an institutional structure for the REDAM Village programme down to the village and sub-district level, including the formation of a Regional Task Force involving the local government and the South Sulawesi Regional Office of the Ministry of Human Rights. According to him, the programme’s success requires community support through continuous education and socialisation.

‘Community support is the key to the success of this programme. Therefore, education and socialisation need to be strengthened,’ he said.

The Gowa Regency Government hopes that the implementation of REDAM Village can become a model for peaceful, inclusive, and just community development based on respect for human rights, while strengthening collaboration between the government, security apparatus, and citizens in preventing social conflict at the local level.
