Govt wants to form KPU branches
KUPANG: The central government is considering establishing
regional branches of the General Elections Commission (KPU) to
help with technical preparations for the 2004 polls, Minister of
Home Affairs Minister Hari Sabarno said on Monday.
Speaking in the East Nusa Tenggara capital of Kupang, he said
these branches would be also tasked with maintaining state
property used in association with elections.
"The election bill is being discussed, which may include the
establishment of permanent KPU branches in the regions," Hari
said. He could not say when the plan would be implemented.
He also urged governors and regents not to side with
political parties in the elections. --Antara
