Govt to shorten process to obtain import-export permits

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government plans to shorten the process to obtain export-import permits from about 10-30 days to only 30 minutes as part of the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) program, an economic affairs official said.

A spokesman of the Coordinating Ministry for Economy, Eddy Putra Irawady, said here Friday that based on data from the World Bank, the processing of export permit in Indonesia needed about 30 days while for import permit the time needed was about 10 days.

According to him, this was due to the fact that most of the processing work was done manually although all the office equipment had been computerized.

"The documents are integrated in a data base. But many of them are still in form of ministrial decrees, whereas we actually need detailed information, not decrees which should be included in the electronic system," he said.

He explained that the government intended to implement the new system of NSW at the end of 2006. "The agency which is most ready for it is Batam island`s port," he said.(*)
