Govt to limit coal exports to 150 million tons/year
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government plans to limit coal exports to 150 million tons per year in order to ensure fulfillment of increasing domestic demand, a minister said here on Wednesday.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said domestic need for coal following the completion of the 10,000-MW power generator program would increase by 65 to 70 million tons per year.
"The restriction on coal exports is to be imposed after the completion of a government regulation as a mandate of Law No 4/2009 on mineral development and the coal demand target this year," Purnomo said.
According to him, the government`s policy was to prioritize domestic demand for coal and therefore coal exports should be limited to about 150 million tons.
Purnomo also said Indonesia`s coal production was expected to increase continuously in the coming years because coal deposits could reach 20 billion tons while potential deposits totaled 90 billion tons.
"Indonesia has coal in abundance but the possibility of increasing production will depend on investment," Purnomo said.
Meanwhile, director general of mineral, coal, and geothermal at the Energy and Mineral Resources Department, Bambang Setiawan, said coal production this year was projected to reach 230 million tons.
Of the figure, 68.5 million tons would be used to meet domestic demand while about 45 to 45 million tons would be earmarked to fuel to domestic power plants, Bambang said.
But he added that following the completion of the 10,000 MW power generation program , domestic demand for coal would increase by 65 to 70 million tons per year.
He said part of the 10,000-MW power generation program would be operational this year and the rest next year.(*)
