Govt to issue declaration on haze

PEKANBARU, Riau: The government and security personnel in Riau
province will soon issue a joint declaration to call on people
and companies to stop slash and burn practices that lead to
forest fires.

The declaration -- to be signed by the Riau governor, the
chief of the Riau Provincial Police and the chief of the Riau
Prosecutor's Office -- will be made public in the near future,
said Riau Governor Rusli Zainal.

The declaration will also inform the public of sanctions for
those who use slash and burn practices to clear land that has led
to haze in the area, said Rusli. -- JP
