Govt to clean Senen overpass

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta administration will clean the area under the Senen overpass of squatters and gambling activities.

"We have sent three notices since June 16 ... Time is up," Senen district head Rahman Siddik was quoted as saying by Antara on Wednesday, refusing to reveal the exact date of the eviction.

He added that the operation was also aimed at correcting the separating lines set for the street vendors which had been moved by certain people to widen the area for street vendors.

Dozens of families now live under the overpass, hanging clothes to dry and placing planks of wood to make walls. In one corner there are four billiard tables, while at least 20 pinball machines stand in another corner. Many vendors selling pirated VCDs are seen in the area.

"The public order officers are now coordinating with the police and the military to carry out the eviction ... We hope it will run well," Rahman added. -- Antara
