Govt, Muhammadiyah cooperate to combat corruption
YOGYAKARTA: An agreement to combat corruption was signed between State Minister of State Enterprises Sugiharto and Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin at Muhammadiyah's headquarters here earlier this week.
Speaking during the program launch, Sugiharto said if the administration was taught to govern with moral values, the accountability and responsibility of state enterprises would improve.
"This is a first step. We will conduct campaigns to eradicate corruption from the country," he said.
Din said that Muhammadiyah was very supportive of the anticorruption drive and had previously been involved in a similar program with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country's biggest Muslim organization.
"We are currently training volunteers to socialize the program," said Din, adding that it was more a moral movement as Muhammadiyah was not an institution with the authority to use the law as a means of bringing about change. --JP
