Govt allocates Rp7.2 trillion for sugar mill revitalization
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The government has allocated Rp7.2 trillion to revitalize around 52 sugar mills across Indonesia, Indonesian Sugar Experts Association (IAGI) chairman Bambang Prijono Basoeki said here on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the 9th congress of IKAGI here, Bambang Prijono said the sugar mills revitalization was intended to increase sugar production capacity.
He said with the revitalization, the production of sugar for domestic consumption was estimated to increase from 2.4 million tons in 2007 to 2.7 million tons this year.
"If production this year reaches 2.7 million tons, we will be able to achieve sugar self-reliance because domestic consumption is only 2.6 million tons," he said, adding that it was not necessary for the government to import sugar if the production target was reached.(*)
