Governorship nominees approved

JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto has approved the three nominees competing to be Jakarta's next governor, according to City Council deputy speaker Ade Surapriatna.

The President's approval, he said Tuesday, came in a letter sent by the minister of home affairs to the council's speaker.

The nominees are Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso, Deputy Governor of Economic and Development Affairs Tb.M. Rais and House of Representatives member Achmadi.

"No change has been made to the three names which had earlier been nominated by the City Council," Ade told reporters after a meeting to prepare procedures to select the next governor.

According to Ade, the council is to hold a plenary session next Tuesday to select the new governor.

At the meeting the 75 councilors will be requested to submit their choice in a closed envelope.

Council Speaker Edy Waluyo said recently that the Armed Forces Commander Gen. Feisal Tanjung had given his blessing for Sutiyoso's nomination for the governorship.

Governor Surjadi Soedirdja's term ends on Oct. 5 and the new governor will be installed on Oct. 6. (ste)
