Governor wants police chief removed
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The local legislative council
(DPRD) is striving hard to persuade Southeast Sulawesi Governor
La Ode Kaimoeddin and the province's police chief Brig. Gen.
Indarto to settle their differences.
The two have been embroiled in a conflict after the governor
allegedly wrote to President Megawati Soekarnoputri demanding
that she remove Indarto from his post.
Kaimoeddin accused Indarto of failing to enforce the law in
the province, including putting a stop to the rampant theft of
teakwood in Muna regency, allegedly involving local officials.
DPRD Speaker Hino Biohanis said on Monday that the council
would summon Kaimoeddin for hearing after he returned from
Jakarta to solve the conflict, which he added could destabilize
the province.
"We will provide him with suggestions and considerations, so
the governor can mend his relationship with the provincial police
chief," Hino said. --Antara
