Governor Surjadi gets award
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja was awarded the Satyalencana Pembangunan (faith in development) award yesterday for furthering the transmigration program.
Minister of Transmigration Siswono Yudohusodo, on behalf of President Soeharto, pinned the insignia on him during a ceremony at the City Hall yesterday.
Siswono said Surjadi successfully promoted the transmigration program during his term in office. In just three years Jakarta sent 19,547 people to transmigration areas outside Java, he said.
Records indicate that Jakarta has sent almost 81,000 people to transmigration sites since the first five-year development plan began in 1969.
According to the 1990 census Jakarta harbored 8.5 million people, the minister said. "The number of people transmigrated is too small compared to Jakarta's population. However, the people have been very meaningful to the development of the transmigration program," he said. (sur)
