Governor slams polygamy

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Governor Herman Musakabe has expressed his dismay over the local people's practice to have more than one wife.

Musakabe said the polygamous practice is widespread although most of the local populace embrace Christianity, which prohibits men from having more than one wife.

He told his guests when celebrating his 54th birthday on Monday, that the reality showed that the local government has yet to intensify its campaign to step up its educational programs.

The governor also criticized the locals' habit to spend money on lavish parties, Antara reported.

He said the people should learn to save and quit their extravagant lifestyle, such as slaughtering cattle for a mere party. (pan)
