Governor should be proactive
Governor should be proactive
From Suara Karya
Since the implementation of regional autonomy, each region has
been playing an important role in handling crime, particularly in
terms of the role of governors.
We all know that crimes and violent acts have been on the
increase because of the number of unemployed people and the
limited employment opportunities as well as the slowdown in the
country's economy. Yet, it is not true that one's right to life
is threatened simply because violence seems to have become
entrenched in our society. All these problems can be solved if
the city governor, Sutiyoso, is proactive, and conducts some
investigations in the field.
Law enforcers like police and other institutions should be
made effective use of as the protection of city residents relies
on them. The governor should then make an effort to raise
policemen's salaries so that they can always maintain their
stamina. Law enforcement equipment should also be improved to
ensure that the police are not inferior to criminals as well as
to prevent them from receiving bribes. The improvement in police
resources is to ensure that there is interaction between police
and the public or a security guarantee from the police to each
resident. Should a crime be committed in an area, community
members will not be reluctant to contact the police as they are
confident of receiving equal justice.
Public services such as disseminating information about the
danger of drugs and the punishment carried out by the police are
very important due to the growth of drug trafficking in our
society.
In the short term, such services show that the regional
government truly cares about the city's security and its
orderliness.
While in the long term, the governor should divide the city
into five districts with different law apparatuses. This is to
minimize crimes in the city and to prevent them from occurring in
one spot only.
