Governor requests acceleration of OAP data collection in Papua Pegunungan by August 2026
Wamena (ANTARA) - The Governor of Papua Pegunungan, John Tabo, has requested that regional heads in the province’s eight regencies accelerate the registration of indigenous Papuan residents (OAP) until 8 August 2026.
“We request that the regional heads in the eight regencies accelerate the registration of indigenous Papuan residents in Papua Pegunungan until 8 August 2026,” he said in Wamena on Saturday.
The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) of the Republic of Indonesia has stated that the deadline for OAP registration in Papua will end in 2027.
However, according to the governor, OAP registration in Papua Pegunungan will be accelerated to be completed this year in order to strengthen population data earlier.
“We want to convey to the regional heads that OAP data in Papua Pegunungan will have a significant impact on fiscal matters or general allocation funds and special autonomy funds (otsus), so the registration is very important to carry out,” he stated.
He explained that suboptimal OAP registration has resulted in the smallest allocation of funds from the central government for Papua Pegunungan compared to the five provinces in Papua.
“In reality, the number of OAP residents in Papua Pegunungan is approximately 1.4 million, the largest compared to the other five provinces in Papua. However, if our data is below 1.4 million, the fiscal allocation received from the centre is very small,” he said.
Therefore, he requested that regional heads in the eight regencies of Papua Pegunungan complete the OAP registration within four months, from May to August 2026.
“The registration must be completed or finalised during those four months, so that before the speech of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, we already have valid OAP population data,” he stated.
The Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government has a 2024 regional budget (APBD) of Rp2.2 trillion, a 2025 APBD of Rp1.8 trillion, and a 2026 APBD of Rp1 trillion.
