Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo acknowledged that he had previously proposed directly connecting the Sarinah Pedestrian Overpass (JPO) to the shopping centre in the area.

“Actually, we already offered for this JPO to enter directly into Sarinah. However, Sarinah is heritage, a cultural heritage site. So they still wanted to preserve that,” said Pramono at Sarinah in Central Jakarta on Monday.

According to Pramono, directly integrating the JPO with the shopping centre would potentially benefit the public whilst supporting economic activity in the area, as pedestrian access would become easier and more comfortable.

To that end, he has held discussions with the Development Assistant to explore whether Sarinah would be willing to have access created from the JPO leading into the building.

The Sarinah JPO has now been revitalised and was officially opened by Pramono on Monday afternoon. Jakarta’s first pedestrian overpass is now more disability-friendly, featuring lifts and tactile guiding blocks on the pavement.

Transjakarta Managing Director Welfizon explained that JPO improvements are part of broader terminal revitalisation and pedestrian infrastructure arrangements. The footpath in the area will subsequently be widened by MRT Jakarta.

The Provincial Government hopes that plans for JPO integration with Sarinah can be realised to make pedestrian access and activities in the area increasingly convenient. “So, in May, there will be footpath widening of approximately 2.6 metres, so pedestrian access will have more spacious area,” said Welfizon.
