Governor Pramono Urges Calm After Matraman Clash, Calls for 'Jaga Jakarta' Unity

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has appealed to the public not to be easily provoked following a clash between residents on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta. Pramono invited residents to jointly maintain the conducive situation of the capital through the spirit of ‘Guard Jakarta’ (Jaga Jakarta).

He made the remarks when met at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (27/7/2026), responding to the clash, which led a madrasah near the location to implement remote learning (PJJ) for security reasons.

“The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government of course expresses its deep concern, sorrow and grief over the incident that occurred in the Matraman area,” Pramono said.

Pramono said he had instructed all DKI provincial government officials to coordinate with law enforcement as well as community, religious and youth figures to prevent the conflict from spreading.

“I have taken steps and instructed the ranks of the DKI Jakarta Government to coordinate with law enforcement, with community figures, religious figures and youth figures, in order to keep the situation conducive and peaceful,” he said.

He also asked law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the incident in accordance with prevailing regulations.

“The Jakarta Government places the highest hopes in law enforcement to resolve this matter amicably, conducting inquiries and investigations in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations,” he said.

Pramono specifically reminded the public not to take actions that could aggravate the situation. According to him, the spread of false information has the potential to escalate the conflict further.

“As Governor of Jakarta, I appeal to all our citizens to keep a cool head, not to take provocative actions that could widen the conflict, not to spread information or disinformation that is not based on facts, and not to damage public facilities,” he said.

Pramono once again invited all residents to guard Jakarta so that the situation remains safe and conducive.

“Once again I invite everyone, as I have repeatedly said, that Jakarta must be guarded together, so ‘Guard Jakarta’ is important in a situation like this,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the DKI provincial government has coordinated with the TNI and the National Police to ensure the situation on the ground remains under control.

“So we have carried out coordination between the TNI, the National Police and the DKI Jakarta Government to keep things conducive. This ‘Guard Jakarta’ slogan is something we use together and I am hopeful that the situation on the ground is now calming down and will not be reignited by developments stemming from disinformation,” he concluded.

Situation Now Conducive

Following the clash, police deployed personnel to secure the location, and the situation on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, has now returned to normal. Economic activity and residents’ routines are gradually recovering under the supervision of officers.

“We can all see that micro, small and medium enterprise activities here are running normally, and community activities are proceeding as usual. Security is still being maintained by Polda Metro Jaya, including from Kodam Jaya,” said Chief of the Public Relations Division of Polda Metro Jaya, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto.

Both feuding parties have agreed to leave the legal process entirely to the police. The police have also asked the public not to be easily provoked emotionally or by issues that could spark division following the incident.

“Let us jointly appeal that the handling of this case has been agreed by both parties — local residents and the group of newcomers — to be handled by the General Crimes Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya,” he said.
