Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo will soon summon the management of online motorcycle taxi (ojol) companies to discuss the regulation of ojol vehicle parking. He believes that addressing the issue, where drivers frequently park on roadsides, cannot be the sole responsibility of the Jakarta Provincial Government and must involve the companies that employ the drivers. “I have requested that the ojol management be called in so we can handle this together. It is impossible for the Jakarta Government to manage it alone,” Pramono stated in Central Jakarta on Wednesday. He noted that the sheer number of ojol drivers makes parking a distinct challenge across various parts of the city. Pramono cited the example of Jalan HR Rasuna Said, where widened pavements designed for pedestrians have been repurposed as parking areas for ojol vehicles. The city administration is therefore preparing a more orderly parking arrangement, including the possibility of providing specific enclaves for drivers to wait for passengers. “If they want to park, for instance, they can use a designated enclave and so on. That is the kind of arrangement that must be implemented,” he explained. Pramono added that the parking overhaul will not only target ojol drivers but will encompass the entire parking system in Jakarta. In the near future, the administration will implement comprehensive parking regulations, covering areas at shopping centres, office buildings, and public spaces. He emphasised that efforts to curb illegal parking must be carried out consistently, despite often drawing public criticism. Pramono pointed to the Blok M area in South Jakarta as an example where enforcement has already produced better conditions. “Previously, when people thought of going to Blok M, they would imagine parking in two or three different spots. After the crackdown, it has become much better,” he said, urging his staff to remain firm in enforcement without being excessive.
