Governor Pramono Positions Rasuna Said as Jakarta's New Icon After Monorail Pillars Are Dismantled
The Jakarta Provincial Government held a motor vehicle-free day (HBKB) or Car Free Day (CFD) on Jalan HR Rasuna Said in South Jakarta on Sunday (10/5/2026). The event, conducted for the first time in that area, also served to welcome Jakarta’s 499th anniversary.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that his administration wants to turn the Rasuna Said area into a new icon. This is because the surrounding region hosts 30 embassies and 15 ministries. In addition, there are more than 200 private office buildings and shopping centres.
“I want to make this a new icon of Jakarta, and I deliberately invited guests before it’s finished. Because if it’s already done and then invited, it looks all good. I intentionally held it here today because it’s not yet complete,” Pramono said in front of Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan and Minister of Environment and Forestry Moh Jumhur Hidayat on Sunday (10/5/2026).
He revealed that the aesthetics of Jalan Rasuna Said were disrupted by the presence of derelict monorail pillars for decades. Therefore, since the beginning of this year, the Jakarta Provincial Government has been revamping the Rasuna Said area. The revamp began with the dismantling of over a hundred monorail pillars along the road on 14 January 2026.
“On this road, there were once 109 monorail pillars, and that monorail was quite disruptive; it had been untouched for nearly 20 years. Alhamdulillah, thanks to the support from law enforcement officials, the Pangdam, Kapolda, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the KPK, the monorail dispute has been resolved, and now we are building it,” he said.
He acknowledged that the Rasuna Said area revamp is not yet fully complete. However, he targets the entire revamp to be finished next month. Once everything is done, he believes the face of Rasuna Said will be vastly different from before.
“I am confident that next month, the face of Jalan Rasuna Said will be completely different. At the same time, this is inspired by the figure of Hajjah Rangkayo Rasuna Said, our national heroine from Padang. I hope this road will become Jakarta’s new icon,” he said.
The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to hold regular CFD events on Jalan HR Rasuna Said starting from 1 June 2026. This is intended as an alternative exercise venue for Jakarta residents every weekend.
