Governor Pramono Confident Jakarta Public Transport Use Will Rise Despite Pertamax Price Hike
The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anubowo, believes that the number of people using public transport will continue to increase, despite adjustments to Transjabodetabek service fares. He noted that the rise in fuel prices, including Pertamax, could actually encourage more citizens to switch to public transport.
“With this increase in fuel prices, the opportunity for people to use public transport becomes even greater,” Pramono stated in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (10/6).
Pramono emphasised that the Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to continuously increasing public interest in using public transport as the primary choice for daily mobility.
He explained that the level of intermodal connectivity for public transport in Jakarta has currently reached 93 per cent. This achievement is considered an important asset for attracting more users, even though the proportion of the population using public transport currently remains below 30 per cent.
Nevertheless, Pramono is optimistic that the number of public transport users can continue to grow alongside improvements in service and ease of access.
“Furthermore, we provide free services for 15 specific groups. Therefore, in Jakarta, matters related to public transport are already very good. There are many options available, such as the MRT, LRT, Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, JakLingko, and so on,” Pramono said.
Previously, the Jakarta Provincial Government set a target to grow the number of public transport users by 5 to 10 per cent annually. This target is expected to help reduce traffic congestion and lower air pollution levels in the capital.
To support the increase in public transport usage, the Jakarta Provincial Government is not only providing free services to 15 specific groups of people but has also issued Jakarta Governor Instruction (Ingub) Number 6 of 2025. Through this policy, all Civil Servants (ASN) within the Jakarta Provincial Government are required to use public transport every Wednesday. This step is part of the government’s efforts to build a broader and more sustainable culture of using public transport in Jakarta.
The government policy that officially raised the price of non-subsidised fuel, specifically Pertamax (RON 92), to Rp16,250 per litre, is viewed as an unavoidable step. As a non-subsidised product, the price of Pertamax should ideally fluctuate following the movement of economic oil prices and global market mechanisms.
The increase in Pertamax fuel prices, effective from Wednesday (10/6), is assessed to have the potential to trigger an inflation spike in North Sumatra of up to 0.31%. The Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) stated that the sudden announcement of the price increase for Pertamax and Pertamax Green caused shock among the public.
