Governor Pramono Confident Jakarta Public Transport Use Will Rise Despite Pertamax Price Hike

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo believes the number of people using public transport will continue to increase despite adjustments to Transjabodetabek service tariffs. He argued that the rising price of fuel, including Pertamax, could actually encourage more citizens to switch to public transport. “Especially with this fuel price increase, the opportunity for people to take public transport is even greater,” Pramono stated in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday. Pramono stressed that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to continuously increasing public interest in using public transport as the primary choice for daily mobility. He explained that the level of intermodal connectivity for public transport in Jakarta has now reached 93 per cent. This achievement is considered important capital to attract more users, even though the proportion of people currently using public transport is still below 30 per cent. Nonetheless, Pramono is optimistic that the number of public transport users can continue to grow in line with service improvements and the ease of access available. “Furthermore, we have made it free for 15 community groups. So, in Jakarta, matters relating to public transport are already very good. There are also many choices, whether it is the MRT, LRT, Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, JakLingko, and so on,” Pramono revealed. Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government targeted growth in public transport users of 5 to 10 per cent annually. This target is expected to help reduce traffic congestion while also suppressing air pollution levels in the capital. To support the increased use of public transport, the Provincial Government not only provides free services to 15 specific community groups but has also issued DKI Jakarta Governor Instruction Number 6 of 2025. Through this policy, all civil servants within the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government are required to use public transport every Wednesday. This measure is part of the government’s effort to build a broader and more sustainable culture of public transport use in Jakarta.
