Governor Pramono Anung Orders Security Tightening in Matraman After Deadly Clash
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has instructed his staff to tighten coordination with law enforcement and community figures to ensure the situation in the Matraman area of East Jakarta remains conducive following a recent clash.
“I have taken action and instructed the Jakarta Provincial Government apparatus to coordinate with law enforcement, community figures, religious leaders and youth leaders, in order to keep the situation conducive and peaceful,” Pramono said at City Hall on Monday (27/7/2026).
Pramono expressed deep concern over the clash that broke out in the area. He affirmed that the Jakarta Provincial Government places great hope in the police to investigate the case thoroughly in accordance with prevailing law.
Beyond instructions to the bureaucracy, the Governor also appealed to the wider public to remain calm and not be provoked by actions that could widen the conflict. He stressed the importance of verifying information to avoid the spread of disinformation or hoaxes.
“I also urge the public not to spread information or disinformation that is not based on facts, and not to damage public facilities. Once again I invite everyone — Jakarta must be guarded together, so ‘Guard Jakarta’ becomes important in a situation like this,” he said firmly.
Based on the information gathered, the clash erupted on Jalan Tambak, Pegangsaan subdistrict, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Sunday (26/7) at around 10.00 Western Indonesia Time. Although administratively part of Central Jakarta, the impact of the clash spread to the Matraman border area.
Preliminary police investigations indicate the incident began from a minor dispute. Two motorcyclists allegedly revved their engines in front of a nasi uduk vendor near the Jami Matraman Mosque on Jalan Matraman Dalam. Residents’ reprimands over the noise were met with anarchic behaviour.
The two riders initially left, but returned with around five companions. The group allegedly damaged the vendor’s cart and assaulted local residents. This triggered resistance from the crowd, leading to an exchange of stones and blunt objects being thrown in the Jalan Tambak area.
The consequences of the clash were severe. Aside from damage to buildings and several vehicles being set alight, two people had to be rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM). One victim, identified as K (23), was reported to have died after receiving medical treatment, while another victim remains in a critical condition.
Police have taken a number of people into custody for further questioning to determine suspects in the deadly Matraman clash.
