Governor Pramono and Company Defend Security Guard Who Reprimanded Alphard Running Red Light

A security guard who reprimanded a Toyota Alphard driver for running a red light at the Bundaran HI in Central Jakarta has received support from Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and his employer. The incident occurred on Wednesday (22/7/2026) when the black MPV drove through a pedestrian crossing against the traffic signal, nearly hitting people crossing the road. CCTV footage shows the vehicle continuing to move despite the red light, prompting the security guard on duty to knock on the car’s window to admonish the driver, which led to a heated argument. Central Jakarta Police Chief AKBP Braiel Arnold Rondonuwu confirmed that the driver was ticketed for the traffic violation and that an investigation is underway regarding the vehicle’s allegedly fake license plate.

Deputy Governor Rano Karno assured the public on Thursday (23/7) that the security guard would not be dismissed over the incident, guaranteeing his job was safe. Governor Pramono Anung reinforced this stance on Friday (24/7), stating that he had reviewed more complete CCTV footage and concluded the guard was performing his duties admirably by protecting pedestrian safety. Pramono explicitly requested that the guard not be fired and urged law enforcement to sanction the Alphard driver, arguing that failure to do so would allow the driver to feel above the law.

The security guard’s employer, the WIKA-RAU KSO joint venture, also issued a statement defending their employee, identified as Victor Harefa. The company’s project manager stated that the guard was carrying out his duty to maintain public safety and order around the project area and confirmed that the company would ensure professional staff receive protection in accordance with regulations. Despite the public outcry, the Menteng Police reported that the security guard and the Alphard driver have since agreed to a peaceful resolution, forgiving each other after a mediation session.
