Governor nominee
Governor nominee
From Merdeka
Nominees for Jakarta governor should be chosen among magnanimous people who are ready to place the interests of other people above their families' and their own personal interests.
The future governor of Jakarta must be someone who can fight for the interests of his residents and do, among other things, the following:
1. Prevent corruption, illegal levies, collusion, manipulation and prostitution.
2. Provide dwellings for civilian/military civil servants and private employees working in Jakarta. He must have houses built for these people in Jakarta.
3. Put in order his own officials so that they will not send away sidewalk sellers because these sellers represent the people.
On the other hand, the governor must have decent buildings built for these sidewalk sellers to run their businesses in, rather than allow them to occupy parts of public roads and consequently cause traffic congestion like what we see at Tanah Abang market.
4. Raise the dignity of tramps, beggars and prostitutes and have decent housing built for them. And provide jobs for the jobless and introduce welfare payments of Rp 75,000 a month for the unemployed.
5. Find ways to prevent flood, traffic jams, fires and crime.
6. Provide elementary schooling to school-age children and prevent management boards and teachers of government schools from collecting any levies. In other words, elementary schooling should be free, just as in Bung Karno's era.
7. Build decent elementary and junior high schools.
8. The governor must not seek domestic or foreign loans to finance development in his region.
9. Nor let anybody use him as a mere instrument. The governor must be able to stand independently and firmly to uphold truth and justice and protect the interests of the people.
A governor who can translate into reality the nine points above must be made a life-long governor. We propose that any nominee who doubts he could fulfill the nine requirements should withdraw from governorship nomination.
Surjadi Soedirdja and Lt. Gen. AM Hendropriyono are good and noble persons who would fit the bill.
