Governor Koster Signs Cooperation Agreement, Targets PSEL Operation by 2028
Source separation of waste will be strictly implemented in Bali to optimise the management of waste into electricity energy.
Denpasar (ANTARA) - Bali Governor Wayan Koster signed a cooperation agreement for the construction of Waste-to-Energy Electricity (PSEL) infrastructure with the central government in Jakarta.
“This strategic waste management project is expected in the future to convert waste into a source of renewable electricity energy, while also reducing the burden on the Suwung landfill and increasing energy resilience in Bali,” said Governor Koster.
In a statement from the Bali Provincial Government in Denpasar on Wednesday, the signing, conducted with the PSEL Project Executing Business Entity (BUPP), was also attended by the Regent of Badung Wayan Adi Arnawa and the Mayor of Denpasar I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, representing the two regions that will utilise the PSEL facility.
During the construction process, waste management in Bali will be tightened from the source, particularly the separation of organic waste.
To that end, on 31 July 2026, the Suwung landfill will once again be closed to organic waste after receiving leniency last week allowing organic waste to enter twice a week. Only quality inorganic waste and residue will be brought to the Suwung landfill as PSEL materials for the next two years.
Currently, Denpasar City has four TPSTs, namely TPST Kertalangu, TPST Tahura I, TPST Tahura II, and TPST Padangsambian, as well as 23 TPS3R scattered across Badung and Denpasar.
Gradually, such quality waste will be utilised to generate electricity at PSEL, after which the Suwung landfill can be repurposed as green open space or a city park.
“If this infrastructure begins to operate, it is hoped that the volume of waste at the landfill will decrease by 70-90 percent, and waste management in Bali will be carried out in a modern, environmentally friendly, and sustainable manner as a source of electricity energy,” he stated.
