Governor Khofifah: BEC Show Inspires Cultural Advancement

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa stated that the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival (BEC) provides inspiration for cultural and civilisational progress, not only for Banyuwangi but also for East Java, Indonesia, and the world. Speaking at the opening of the 2026 ethnic fashion parade in the Taman Blambangan area, Banyuwangi Regency, on Saturday, she said the BEC is a manifestation of the creativity of cultural practitioners, artists, and creative industry players in the regency at the eastern tip of Java. Through joint orchestration with the local government, they have presented a performance that is not only attractive but also rich in artistic and cultural values. Khofifah expressed her gratitude to the Banyuwangi Regency Government for orchestrating all activities in Banyuwangi, especially the BEC, and expressed hope that Banyuwangi will continue to soar and progress, with its people building synergy from the local to the global level. She added that the event demonstrated a shared spirit of moving ‘from local to global’, shown through the strength of culture, innovation, and creativity of the Banyuwangi community. Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani expressed gratitude that the 14th edition of the ethnic costume parade remains a highly anticipated event for both local and international audiences. She thanked all parties who contributed to this year’s BEC, especially the young people involved in the parade, and added that synergy and collaboration are key for Banyuwangi to present high-quality events like the BEC. Thousands of people enthusiastically filled the spectator areas, from around the main stage to both sides of the road along the route. The theme ‘Perang Bayu’ was presented in five sub-theme fragments through costumes, depicting the struggle of the native Banyuwangi people during the war against the Dutch colonial army in the 18th century. The BEC was attended by Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan, Presidential Special Envoy for Tourism Zita Anjani, representatives from the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, as well as several national figures from central government, the House of Representatives, state-owned enterprise executives, and the private sector. This year’s BEC was also witnessed by delegations from ASEAN member countries, East Asia Summit countries, and the Pacific Islands Forum.
