Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung hopes the Haul Akbar Ulama dan Habaib Betawi, held for the first time, can become a new tradition for the city’s residents. He stated the event is a form of respect for the ulama, habaib, and Betawi community figures who have contributed to the capital.

“This is the first event, and I, as the Governor of Jakarta who initiated it, hope and pray that it becomes a new tradition for all of us to recite shalawat while remembering the religious and community figures of Betawi who have served Jakarta,” Pramono said during his address before thousands of worshippers at Monas Plaza, Central Jakarta, on Friday evening.

Pramono agreed with various suggestions from ulama and community leaders that the activity should be held sustainably. He said remembering the services of the ulama and habaib is an expression of gratitude as well as a means of learning from predecessors who laid the foundations for present-day Jakarta.

In addition to commemorating the services of Betawi ulama and habaib, Pramono noted the grand haul is part of a series of events marking Jakarta’s 499th anniversary. Next year, Jakarta will enter its fifth century.

“This long journey has contributed to the nation’s journey, especially Jakarta. Therefore, this city must be a home for various ethnicities, religions, cultures, and community backgrounds so they can live side by side,” he said.
