Governor Dedi aims for West Java to become Indonesia's largest electricity-producing province

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi is targeting for the province to become the largest electricity producer in Indonesia by accelerating the construction of various renewable energy plants, including waste-to-energy (PSEL) facilities. The groundbreaking of the Legok Nangka PSEL in Bandung Regency on Wednesday is seen as a catalyst for building a modern waste management system. Dedi stated that the project would not only resolve environmental issues and produce clean energy sustainably but also educate the public on cleanliness and improve air and environmental quality. He noted that West Java already possesses various energy sources, such as solar and geothermal power plants, which will be further strengthened by the development of PSEL in multiple areas, including Greater Bandung, Garut, Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi. The provincial government also plans to push for a similar facility in the Cirebon region to address its significant waste problem. Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung said the Legok Nangka PSEL is designed with a generating capacity of 40.79 megawatts and an investment value of 400 million US dollars, or approximately Rp7.2 trillion. The construction period is expected to last around 41 months, with a commercial operation date in 2029, and is projected to absorb about 1,565 workers. The project is also estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 311,874 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. The central government has reinforced regulations to accelerate waste-to-energy development through Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025, replacing the previous 2018 regulation, with the Energy Ministry following up by easing business licensing and providing flexibility for PSEL development capacity beyond the Electricity Supply Business Plan quota.
