The Governor of North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution, has urged the management of PT PLN (Persero) North Sumatra Distribution Unit to pay close attention to the widespread impact of rolling blackouts, which are causing losses to the public, particularly small business owners in the region.

He expressed this during a visit to the PT PLN (Persero) North Sumatra Load Dispatch Unit Office in Medan on Monday (8/6). “The public is complaining. They are suffering losses due to these rolling blackouts, especially small entrepreneurs who rely on electricity,” Bobby stated firmly.

The Governor highlighted the lack of clear information regarding the schedules and the specific areas affected by the blackouts. This lack of transparency prevents residents from making necessary preparations, leading to repeated disruptions to both economic and household activities every day.

Bobby emphasised that while the damage to dozens of transmission towers was caused by extreme weather, this should be accompanied by transparent communication with the local government and the public. Key concerns raised include:

  • PLN’s perceived lack of transparency regarding blackout schedules.

  • The urgent need to repair 12 extra-high voltage (SUTET) towers damaged by extreme weather.

  • Demands for compensation for affected customers, such as electricity bill discounts or token reductions.

  • Criticism regarding the disparity in sanctions: PLN acts swiftly to disconnect supply for late payments, yet responds slowly to service disruptions.

Regarding compensation for the losses incurred, Bobby requested that PLN provide compensation to all customers in North Sumatra. He proposed that this compensation take the form of electricity bill reductions or discounts on token purchases for prepaid customers.

“Even a slight delay in payment results in immediate sanctions, including disconnection or meter removal. We are waiting two to three days for the repair process,” added Bobby, comparing PLN’s strictness towards customers with the current quality of service.

In response, the General Manager of PLN North Sumatra Distribution Unit, Mundakhir Salman, issued an official apology to the Governor and the people of North Sumatra. He explained that the disruption was triggered by damage to 12 extra-high voltage (SUTET) towers. Regarding the demand for compensation, PLN stated they would forward the proposal to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), as the authority to establish compensation policies rests with the central government.
