Governor Bobby Nasution Continues to Coordinate with Central Government on North Sumatra Blackout Impact

North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution is continuing coordination regarding the handling of the blackout’s impact that occurred in several areas of North Sumatra. Bobby stated that electricity supply in the province has now fully returned to normal.

‘This morning it was already reported that supply is 100% restored. It’s 100% back to normal,’ Bobby said after a post-disaster recovery meeting with the House of Representatives and government officials at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (25 May 2026).

Bobby acknowledged that the power outage has caused losses for several business sectors, including livestock and fisheries that rely on cold storage facilities.

‘Yes, that’s the affected livestock sector. The chain of impacts will need to be assessed. We will then determine the mitigation measures. There are also industries, such as fisheries using cold storage and other facilities,’ he explained.

‘We will assess the extent of the damage to determine whether the provincial government can handle it or if coordination with higher authorities, including the central government, is required,’ he added.

The Gerindra politician stated that they have followed up on public complaints. However, he said that during the blackout, the government prioritised essential services such as hospitals and economic hubs to remain operational.

‘Follow-up actions have already been taken. The priority was ensuring hospitals and other essential services remained operational, along with economic centres, while other areas are still being coordinated,’ he said.

PT PLN (Persero) Transmission Director Edwin Nugraha Putra previously explained the timeline of the total blackout in Sumatra. He stated that a power swing or high-voltage oscillation was the primary cause of the interconnected system’s collapse.

Edwin made the statement during a press conference at the Bareskrim of the Indonesian National Police in South Jakarta on Monday (25 May). He initially apologised to affected residents across Jambi, Riau, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh.

‘PT PLN (Persero) extends its deepest apologies, particularly to residents in Riau, Jambi, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh, for the power disruption that occurred last Friday,’ Edwin said.
