'Governor a model for subordinates'

JAKARTA (JP): Inspector General of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that Governor Surjadi Soedirdja was an exemplary model for his subordinates.

Soedardjat Nataatmaja, however, said that Soedirja was not supported by officials of equal quality.

After a council meeting yesterday, he said that this was the main conclusion of an inspection of the municipality's performance under Surjadi.

"It is up to the city officials whether or not to follow his example," Soedardjat said yesterday.

In a response to a suggestion that Surjadi be renominated, he replied that the proposal would be taken into account.

Meanwhile, the Pos Kota daily quoted Tadjus Sobirin, chairman of the city chapter of the dominant Golkar party as saying that the party would release the name of a candidate on Thursday April 17.

A 1974 government regulation says that governors may serve a second term.

Surjadi, who was officially inaugurated as the governor of Jakarta on Oct. 6, 1992, ends his five-year term on Oct. 6. (11)
