Government Urges Public to Be Wise on Social Media Ahead of Independence Day

Ahead of the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence, Head of the Government Communication Agency (Bakom) Muhammad Qodari has urged the public not to be easily provoked by information circulating on social media. Qodari stated that the national security situation is currently safe, stable, and under control. “The public is expected to remain calm and wise in receiving various information, especially on social media. It is important for all of us to always check the source, time, and context of information before concluding or disseminating it,” Qodari said in a press statement in Jakarta on Monday.

He explained that various security measures implemented in public spaces are part of standard risk mitigation and management efforts to protect the community, and do not necessarily indicate an increased security threat. Qodari also asked the public to continue their daily activities as usual and to make official sources their primary reference for information. “The government will continue to deliver information openly, quickly, and based on facts,” he stressed.

Furthermore, Qodari affirmed that the government respects every citizen’s freedom to express opinions as guaranteed by the constitution. However, he expressed hope that this freedom would be exercised peacefully and in an orderly manner, in accordance with applicable laws. He invited all Indonesians to welcome the 81st Independence Day by strengthening unity, mutual cooperation, and a sense of togetherness. “Let us make this 81st Independence Day a momentum to strengthen our love for the homeland and shared optimism in building a more advanced Indonesia. With the spirit of a Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia, let us celebrate independence with joy, order, and by safeguarding Indonesia as our shared home,” he concluded.
