Government urges parents and children to reprimand non-compliant platforms under PP Tunas

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is inviting parents and children in Indonesia to play an active role in supervising and even reprimanding digital platforms that refuse to fulfil their obligations to comply with Government Regulation number 17 of 2025 on Child Protection Governance in the Administration of Electronic Systems (PP Tunas). The involvement of parents and children as stakeholders closely related to PP Tunas is greatly needed to ensure that Indonesia’s next generation obtains a safe, healthy, and comfortable digital space. “We invite all parents and also children to participate in supervising and reprimanding platforms that reject this compliance,” said Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid in her statement received by ANTARA on Monday evening. Social media platforms such as Threads, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, Bigo Live, Roblox, and TikTok fall into the high-risk platform category. This regulation is considered an appropriate step and has been implemented by many other countries, especially in the European region to the Middle East. “This is not just a new policy, this is a change in habits, a change in behaviour, a change in methods that require effort, certainly time and energy. Including efforts to combat addiction which may not be easy, uncomfortable for both children and parents. Therefore, lastly, we remain focused and continue to strive. Let us wait until the children are ready,” said Meutya. PP Tunas will take effect in Indonesia on 28 March 2026, initially targeting eight digital platforms, namely Threads, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, Bigo Live, Roblox, and TikTok. So far, only X and Bigo Live have complied with the regulation. TikTok and Roblox are categorised as partially cooperative platforms and are urged to immediately fulfil their obligations fully in accordance with the provisions of PP Tunas. Further escalating sanctions up to access suspension may be imposed in accordance with the provisions of Minister of Komdigi Regulation number 9 of 2026 if this summons is ignored by both technology giants.
