Government Urges Cross-Sector Collaboration to Strengthen Intellectual Property Ecosystem
The Indonesian Government is encouraging all ministries and agencies to align their policies and programmes in order to build an intellectual property (IP) ecosystem focused on innovation, increasing the added value of products and services, and strengthening the nation’s competitiveness.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Law, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, while opening the 2026 Indonesian National Intellectual Property Coordination Forum at the Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday (4/8). According to Edward, every ministry and agency has an important contribution to make in line with its respective duties and functions.
“Amid the rapid development of innovation, technology and the creative economy, strengthening the intellectual property ecosystem can no longer be done sectorally; it requires close, continuous and mutually complementary collaboration,” said Edward.
As a follow-up to these efforts, the Ministry of Law has initiated the formation of a National Intellectual Property Coordination Team involving relevant ministries and agencies. The government is also said to be continuing to refine the National Intellectual Property Master Plan 2027–2036 as a reference for aligning policies across ministries and agencies.
“The National Intellectual Property Coordination Forum will serve as a vehicle to align these strategic steps while strengthening our shared commitment to building a national IP ecosystem,” Edward added.
Director General of Intellectual Property, Hermansyah Siregar, explained that the forum is designed as a strategic coordination platform across ministries and agencies to strengthen national intellectual property governance.
In addition, the forum serves as a momentum to align policies and strengthen synergy among stakeholders, in order to make intellectual property a pillar of economic development based on innovation, creativity and national competitiveness.
“This forum is held as a strategic coordination platform across ministries and agencies to strengthen national intellectual property governance that is integrated, collaborative and sustainable,” said Hermansyah.
Over its two-day run, the forum addressed various strategic agendas, including strengthening intellectual property diplomacy, improving Indonesia’s position in the Global Innovation Index (GII), establishing the National Intellectual Property Coordination Team, drafting the National Intellectual Property Master Plan 2027–2036, and reinforcing cross-ministerial commitment through the signing of memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements.
The forum was also supported by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which considered the effort highly relevant and strategic for Indonesia as it seeks to move up a class on the international stage.
“Through WIPO’s methodology for developing and implementing a national IP strategy, we will continue to support Indonesia in outlining a data-driven, practical and implementation-oriented IP roadmap,” said Hasan Kleib, Deputy Director General of WIPO’s Regional and National Development Sector.
The 2026 Indonesian National Intellectual Property Coordination Forum was attended by representatives from 36 ministries and agencies, international organisations, academics and various stakeholders.
Through this forum, the Ministry of Law hopes that cross-sector synergy will further strengthen the protection, utilisation, development and enforcement of intellectual property, capable of driving the creation of value-added innovation, improving national competitiveness and supporting the realisation of Golden Indonesia 2045.
