Government Urges Bulog to Supply Premium Rice in Modern Retail
The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has tasked Perum Bulog with supplying its premium quality rice to modern retail outlets. “So Bulog is filling the supply shortfall, meaning it is not scarce. This can be filled by Bulog,” said Bapanas Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilisation I Gusti Ketut Astawa in a written statement on Friday, 12 June 2026.
The statement was made by Ketut during an online coordination meeting on the availability and price stabilisation of rice in modern retail, held by Bapanas on 5 June 2026. One of the meeting’s outcomes was assigning Bulog to accelerate market intervention through the distribution of both medium and premium rice to maintain supply availability and price stabilisation at the consumer level.
According to Ketut Astawa, the quantity of premium rice in modern retail is currently limited. This condition should be capitalised on by Bulog to place their commercial rice in modern retail outlets. Ketut stated that the premium rice brands produced by Bulog include Befood, Punokawan, and Sentra Ramos.
Ketut Astawa said that in a report received by the National Food Agency, Bulog had 11,400 tonnes of premium rice stock as of 12 June 2026. The realisation of rice equivalent procurement for commercial stock currently stands at 45,500 tonnes out of a total procurement target of 3.1 million tonnes.
Meanwhile, during a working meeting with Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Thursday, 10 June 2026, Head of the National Food Agency Andi Amran Sulaiman proposed that Bulog should not only focus on producing medium quality rice designated for the food supply and price stabilisation programme (SPHP). “On the contrary, Bulog should produce more premium rice,” said Amran.
During the meeting, Amran reported that national rice stock in Bulog warehouses reached 5.3 million tonnes. Meanwhile, the storage capacity of Bulog warehouses is only up to 3 million tonnes. Consequently, Amran said, Bulog is renting warehouses to store the rice stock. With such abundant quantity, Amran urged business operators not to manipulate the price of the food commodity. “Once again, to all rice traders throughout Indonesia, do not manipulate prices,” he stated.
Amran said the National Food Agency has cooperated with the police to monitor business operators and rice prices. He stated that the food task force would take action against rice traders engaging in fraudulent practices.
