Government Urged to Achieve Independence from Fuel Oil Energy Dependence
The government is being urged to immediately accelerate the energy transition from petroleum-based fuels (BBM) to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. This step is considered crucial not only for protecting the environment but also for creating national independence in managing natural resources.
“The government’s overarching strategy should develop renewable energy sources, strengthen electrical infrastructure, provide economic incentives, and build a domestic electric vehicle industry so that the transition from fuel oil to cleaner energy can proceed gradually and sustainably. This is also for independence regarding natural resources and fuel oil,” said West Java Regional Legislative Assembly (DPRD) member Syahrir on Friday, 13 March.
According to Syahrir, the shift towards renewable energy is considered an urgent necessity amid fluctuations in global energy prices that often burden the state budget and the public. By strengthening electrical infrastructure, the government is expected to be able to provide stable energy supply for industrial and household needs in the future.
“We are pushing for this policy not to remain merely a topic of discussion. Concrete steps are needed in the form of regulations that support an electric vehicle ecosystem so that the public feels confident and able to shift away from fuel oil dependence,” he explained.
Beyond infrastructure factors, Syahrir continued, providing economic incentives to businesses and consumers is a key to the success of this transition. With a mature ecosystem, Indonesia is expected to become a major player in the electric vehicle industry whilst reducing carbon emissions from the transport and energy sectors.
“Energy independence is non-negotiable. By optimising our natural resource potential through renewable energy technology, we not only save the environment but also secure the nation’s economic future from foreign dependence,” said the Commission I member of the West Java DPRD.
