Government to Renovate 21,000 Houses in Papua
Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait has announced plans to renovate 21,000 uninhabitable houses in Papua. The house renovation programme will commence on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
“In accordance with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, uninhabitable houses must be repaired on a massive scale as soon as possible,” said Maruarar at Wisma Danantara in Jakarta on Friday, 17 April 2026. Ara—the minister’s familiar nickname—stated that the programme has also been reported to Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Chairman of the Housing Task Force.
Ara explained that the house renovation programme will be implemented in six provinces covering 42 regencies/cities. In each regency/city, at least 500 houses will be renovated.
In addition to house renovations, Ara added, the People’s Business Credit (KUR) housing programme will also reach Papua. There is also a housing financing programme in collaboration with PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur and PT Permodalan Nasional Madani.
Besides renovating houses, the government will reorganise slum areas. “So our programmes are quite extensive, not only building and renovating houses, but also ensuring the areas are no longer slums. Then the people are economically empowered,” said Ara.
