Government to Redistribute 498,000 Teachers to Fill Vacancies in Regions
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is mapping non-civil servant teachers already registered in the Dapodik system as of 31 December 2024 for redistribution to fill teacher shortages in various regions.
The Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel (GTK) of Kemendikdasmen, Nunuk Suryani, stated that this redistribution is a directive from the Minister of State Apparatus Utilization and Bureaucratic Reform, Rini Widyantini.
“So, in terms of current teacher needs, our data shows 498,000, but this must first be redistributed. That’s the directive from the Minister,” said Nunuk during a press conference at the Kemendikdasmen office in Central Jakarta on Monday (11/5/2026).
“There are schools that still have excess teachers. Why do we need to calculate? The Minister said it’s being done step by step, calculated first because there is a task from local governments to redistribute teachers first so that the needs are clear,” she explained.
Nunuk mentioned that there are schools with surplus teachers for certain subjects, while others lack teachers to the point of having classes without supervisors.
“So we are accelerating so that those with excess are quickly redistributed to other places. Because when I visit regions, usually many don’t know yet, aren’t informed, or are constrained by the system,” she said.
“Our hope is that by 2026, all teacher needs can be met in terms of formation,” she clarified.
Currently, the government is still discussing the future scheme for organising non-ASN teachers, including options on whether honorary teachers will become PNS or PPPK.
“So because now there can’t be non-ASN, of course in the future the selection will be ASN. The ASN could be PNS or PPPK. This is currently being formulated,” she said.
Through Circular Letter Number 7 of 2026, the deadline for assigning non-ASN teachers in public schools is until 31 December 2026, with the government hoping there will be no more non-ASN or honorary teachers.
