Government to Improve Sea Transportation Facilities
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The government plans to improve sea transportation facilities in some areas to develop the potential of local economies. Optimizing inter-island system of distribution is expected to strengthen and sustain the national economy.
Infrastructure and Area Development deputy chief in the office of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Bambang Susantono, said that Indonesia’s economy has proven to have withstood the global economic crisis because of strong domestic consumption.
“Since we are an archipelagic country, we should develop inter-island activity,” Bambang said following a meeting at his office yesterday.
He could not yet confirm which areas will be developed or the budget required to realize the plan. “We are still in the mapping stage,” he said.
However, it is clear that the development of inter-island sea transportation system is aimed at the eastern part of Indonesia.
