The Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN), who also serves as COO of Danantara, Dony Oskaria, stated that one of the evaluations concerns level crossings. Currently, there are still 1,800 railway crossings that need their quality improved. “We realise there are approximately 1,800 crossings that we must improve in quality,” Dony said when met at the Mulia Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/4). “But unfortunately, it cannot be avoided; once again, we apologise that we will soon conduct a thorough evaluation, both of our railway operations and particularly concerning safety,” he added. Dony conveyed that this evaluation has also been a concern of President Prabowo Subianto. Regarding level crossings, Dony stated that the government is preparing a budget of Rp 4 trillion. “President has already mentioned there will be an additional Rp 4 trillion. This will be combined with the railway budget, and state-owned enterprises will also participate in the safety commitment for all road users, both those on the trains and those crossing the tracks,” he said. AHY Highlights Numerous Level Crossings Meanwhile, during a visit to Bekasi Timur Station, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), also raised the issue of the many level crossings around Bekasi Timur Station. “Actually, we have identified from the start that there are still quite a few level crossings. Where the railway tracks also coincide with land transportation routes, meaning roads cross with the railway tracks,” AHY told reporters on Tuesday (28/4/2026). AHY said the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) will conduct an investigation. AHY mentioned that his side will oversee this investigation process. AHY requested that the KNKT’s investigation process be conducted transparently. In addition, he wants to ensure that level crossings around Bekasi Timur Station are guarded. “At the same time, of course, we identify what can be done immediately. For example, regarding the still numerous level crossings, we must ensure that every railway crossing point has security and staff on guard,” he added. He also mentioned the plan to build a flyover at the level crossing that has yet to be realised. “For example, the Mayor has said that there were actually plans before this incident. But it still requires processes,” said AHY. “I request and I want to push to accelerate everything because, for instance, building a flyover so that there are no more level crossings requires spatial planning preparation and land,” he continued. As is known, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train collided with a stationary KRL at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday (27/4) night. The incident began with a taxi getting stuck under the KRL at a crossing not far from Bekasi Timur Station. The taxi getting stuck under the KRL caused the KRL at Bekasi Station to wait. The Argo Bromo Anggrek train then arrived and collided from behind. To date, the total death toll from the accident is 15 people. In addition, dozens of people were injured. “Yes, 15 dead,” said the Head of Health Services of Metro Jaya Police, Senior Commissioner Martinus Ginting, at Bhayangkara Hospital Level I Pusdokkes Polri (RS Polri), Jakarta, on Tuesday (28/4).
