Government to Build 30 Waste-to-Energy Facilities, Targeting Processing of 14.4 Million Tonnes of Waste per Year
The government is targeting the construction of 30 Waste-to-Energy Electricity Processing Facilities (PSEL) with a handling capacity of 14.4 million tonnes of waste per year. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that this capacity equates to approximately 22.5% of the national total waste. “The total waste handled will be around 14.4 million tonnes per year,” said Zulhas during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday (31/3/2026). Currently, two PSEL facilities are operational, located in Surabaya since 2021 and in Surakarta. Both adhere to Presidential Regulation No. 35 of 2018. Another project is underway in Greater Bandung, which will serve six regencies and cities. Four new projects are slated to be built soon in Greater Denpasar, Bekasi, Greater Bogor, and Yogyakarta. These projects involve consortia of international and local companies under the coordination of Danantara. “The tenders have already been issued,” said Zulhas.
