The government intends to build thousands of suspension bridges in remote areas by the middle of this year. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that many regions remain isolated due to a lack of bridges. The government is targeting the completion of 2,500 suspension bridges by August 2026, with construction continuing to reach a total of 5,000 bridges by the end of the year. Teddy said the presence of bridges can transform community life. “Through this suspension bridge construction programme, President Prabowo is promoting faster, safer, and more equitable connectivity to all corners of Indonesia,” he said in a written statement on Thursday, 25 June 2026. He noted that the construction is a collaboration between the government, the Indonesian Army (TNI AD), and local communities. “New bridges continue to appear, connecting regions that for years have been separated by rivers and difficult terrain,” said the Army lieutenant colonel. Teddy added that children in areas without bridges currently have to cross rivers to attend school. He expressed hope that the suspension bridge infrastructure would ease travel for them and other residents. In March 2026, President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated hundreds of bridges across various regions in Indonesia, including areas affected by disasters and remote locations. The total number of bridges inaugurated at that time was 218, comprising bailey, armco, and pioneer-type bridges.
