The government will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for five Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) projects in June 2026.

The Head of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Muhammad Qodari, stated that the five projects will be spread across five different regions.

“Five locations are targeted for groundbreaking in June 2026 (spread across) Bekasi City, Yogyakarta City, Greater Bogor, Greater Denpasar, and Greater Bandung,” Qodari said at the KSP Office, Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

This groundbreaking plan is based on Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 12 of 2025 on the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), which targets 100% waste management by 2029.

This target is set because the current amount of waste is already very large, reaching 141,926 tonnes per day, while Final Processing Sites (TPA) remain limited.

Therefore, the government is promoting an agglomeration-based approach or functional regional unity that combines one region with its supporting areas.

“What is targeted is the ability to reduce waste generation by around 33,000 tonnes per day, or equivalent to 22.48% of the national total generation in 2029,” Qodari stated.

Qodari continued that the PSEL programme is also designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN) in urban areas that produce more than 1,000 tonnes of waste per day.

“The government is opening opportunities for all regions in Indonesia that meet the criteria, such as waste generation above 1,000 tonnes per day, to build waste-to-electricity processing facilities,” he said.
