Jakarta, KOMPAS.com - The government, through the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (Kemkomdigi), will soon ban the use of high-risk social media accounts for children under the age of 16.

‘Mulai 28 Maret 2026, implementasi dilakukan secara bertahap, dimulai pada platform seperti YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, dan Roblox,’ said Minister of Communications and Digitalisation Meutya Hafid in a press statement on Friday (6 March 2026). He said this is an important step the government is taking for Indonesia’s children’s future. The basis is Ministerial Regulation and Government Regulation.

‘Through Ministerial Regulation No. 9 of 2026, a derivative of PP TUNAS, the government stipulates that children under 16 can no longer have accounts on high-risk digital platforms,’ Meutya said in his statement on Friday (6 March 2026). Meutya added that there are eight giant digital platforms, from YouTube to Roblox, that cannot be accessed by children under 16.

‘The threat in the digital space for children is becoming more real, including pornography, cyberbullying, online scams, and digital addiction,’ he added.

Meutya acknowledged that the decision might cause discomfort initially. However the government cannot stay silent when the future of children is at stake.

‘The government ensures accountability for child protection lies with the platforms that manage digital space, so parents do not have to face these challenges alone,’ he said.

‘Technology must humanise people, not sacrifice our children’s childhoods,’ he added.
