Government Targets Thuggery, Not Civil Organisations, Says Presidential Communications Chief

Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi has affirmed that the government's target is to eradicate thuggery (premanisme), not civil society organisations (ormas).

Hasan explained that one of the factors currently disrupting business operations and investment is the practice of thuggery, whether carried out by certain groups of individuals or by civil organisations.

"What the government wants to address and eliminate is thuggery — acts of thuggery whether by individuals or organisations. That is what the government intends to eliminate," Hasan stated, as quoted by Antara on Saturday (17 May).

"And today the government is forming a special team to tackle this issue," he added.

Hasan said thuggery has drawn the government's attention because it has hindered investment and disrupted the business environment.

"Investors are afraid to come to us. People who want to do business are afraid to operate here because of additional costs and additional burdens resulting from acts of thuggery. So what is causing the disruption is the thuggery itself," Hasan said.

During the same discussion event, Hasan noted that the government's efforts to eradicate thuggery also require time, meaning that thuggery will not instantly disappear once perpetrators are dealt with by authorities.

Hasan further explained that the government needs to find ways to prevent thugs from repeating their actions, redirecting their time and abilities towards productive endeavours.

"It certainly requires a process, and regardless, they are also children of the Indonesian nation who need to be shown a way out, nurtured and directed towards more productive work. They are our human resources who can also be developed and trained," Hasan said.

Presidential Spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi, speaking to journalists at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday (9 May), stated that President Prabowo Subianto was troubled by acts of thuggery carried out in the name of civil society organisations.
