Government Targets Addition of 17 Gigawatts of Solar Power Plants, Prabowo Requests Accelerated Realisation
JAKARTA - The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, stated that the government is targeting the addition of 17 gigawatts of renewable energy this year through solar power plants (PLTS). This target encompasses the expansion of PLTS capacity as well as the reduction of diesel power plants (PLTD). “For now, based on calculations conducted jointly with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, PLN, Danantara, and several experts from universities, approximately 17 gigawatts of PLTS installations can be carried out,” said Brian after a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/4/2026). According to him, President Prabowo has specifically requested that the implementation of this programme be accelerated, particularly to replace diesel-based power plants. “The President inquired about its progress and requested that it be sped up, especially for the diesel ones,” Brian explained. “The locations will all be from PLN, which serves as the implementer of this programme,” he added. With this acceleration, Indonesia is expected not only to pursue its capacity targets but also to affirm its position as a key player in the clean energy transformation in the region.
