Government Subsidises Soybeans by Rp 2,000 per Kg, Hoping to Keep Tempeh Prices Stable

The government is providing a subsidy of Rp 2,000 per kilogram for soybeans to help tempeh artisans cope with rising raw material prices caused by global market turmoil. Trade Minister Budi Santoso said the policy was discussed in a meeting led by Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan on Tuesday (9/6/2026) as a measure to sustain tempeh production amidst the soybean price hike. “Because it is disrupted by the rising prices, we are helping the tempeh artisans,” Budi said in Bogor, West Java, on Friday (12/6/2026). In the initial phase, the government will provide a subsidy for around 250,000 tonnes of imported soybeans. The move is expected to ease the burden of rising production costs driven by surging international commodity prices. Budi explained that the increase in soybean prices is influenced by global conditions, including the impact of conflicts and geopolitical uncertainty affecting supply chains and world food commodity trade. With this subsidy, the government hopes tempeh artisans can maintain production and sell their products at prices that remain affordable for the public. “The goal is to alleviate the impact of price increases due to global market turmoil and war, so that artisans can continue producing tempeh at current prices,” Budi said.
