Government Strengthens Oversight to Prevent Corruption in Immigration
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has emphasised that the government is strengthening oversight systems, improving bureaucratic governance, and increasing the transparency of public services following the emergence of several corruption cases involving immigration officials.
Speaking in Jakarta on Monday, Yusril stated that these measures are part of the legal and bureaucratic reform commitment directed by President Prabowo Subianto. According to Yusril, the various corruption cases that have surfaced recently must serve as a lesson for all civil servants (ASN) within the Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Human Rights, and the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs.
“The incidents occurring over the past few days should serve as a lesson for us all so that they do not recur in the future,” said Yusril.
He noted that public services in the digital era cannot rely solely on good systems but also require officials who possess integrity in performing their duties. Consequently, the government will conduct evaluations of service systems, implementing regulations, and technical guidelines to ensure all work processes are more measurable and have minimal loopholes for malpractice.
“When an application is submitted, there must be a clear timeframe for completion, a specified payment amount, and everything must be conducted transparently,” he added.
Yusril explained that oversight will be strengthened through both internal and external mechanisms. In addition to supervisory roles held by superiors over subordinates, the government is also opening space for oversight by the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP), the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK), and law enforcement agencies, including the police, the attorney general’s office, and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Should officials still be found engaging in misconduct, the government will impose strict sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations. “If our employees continue to commit deviations, superiors will certainly take firm and decisive action in accordance with the regulations,” he emphasised.
Yusril added that bureaucratic reform cannot be achieved in a short period. However, the government will continue to monitor, increase supervision, and improve systems within immigration, correctional, legal administration, and human rights services to strengthen official integrity and enhance the quality of public service.
