Government strengthens museum development as educational tool

The government continues its efforts to preserve national cultural heritage by developing museums as educational spaces and tools for strengthening national identity.

This commitment was demonstrated by the Indonesian Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, during a visit to the Museum Pos Indonesia and the Bandung Post Office on Jalan Cilaki, Bandung, West Java. The visit is part of the Ministry of Culture’s agenda to encourage thematic museums in Indonesia to become increasingly relevant to the public, particularly the younger generation.

“Museum Pos does not merely store collections, but tells the journey of the nation. The role of the post is very important in Indonesian history, including during the era of the struggle for independence,” Fadli Zon stated in an official release on Saturday.

During the visit, Fadli Zon inspected various collections that record the history of the development of postal and communication services in Indonesia, ranging from postal equipment, stamp collections, and letter boxes to historical archives.

The Minister of Culture also visited the Bandung Post Office building, which is over a century old and holds heritage status. He assessed that the building possesses high historical value and deserves recognition as a national-level cultural heritage site.

According to him, museums play a strategic role in increasing literacy while reviving the culture of letter writing as a form of expression and human connection. The government is also paying attention to the tradition of philately, as stamps are considered part of the material culture that records various events and national identity.

As a concrete form of strengthening literacy, the Ministry of Culture held a Letter Writing Competition to Heroes last year, which was attended by more than 34,000 participants from various educational levels. All letters were handwritten, accompanied by stamps, and sent via PT Pos Indonesia services.

The Commercial Director of PT Pos Indonesia, Fahdel Akbar, appreciated the Minister of Culture’s visit, noting that it serves as an incentive to develop the Museum Pos Indonesia into a more modern and interactive educational space.

Moving forward, the Ministry of Culture will continue to encourage improvements in exhibition quality, the strengthening of historical narratives, and the utilisation of digital technology in various thematic museums to make them more attractive and capable of strengthening Indonesia’s cultural identity.
