Government Strengthens Electricity System to Prevent Repeated Blackouts
The government is committed to strengthening the reliability of the national electricity system to ensure disruptions such as the recent blackout in the Java-Bali system do not recur, through reinforced primary energy supply, plant readiness, and accelerated energy transition.
Head of the Government Communication Office Muhammad Qodari said in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday that the government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, has instructed PT PLN (Persero) to secure the availability of primary energy according to the quantity and specifications required by the electricity system.
“The government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, has instructed PT PLN to ensure the availability of primary energy in the amount and specifications needed, strengthen supply chain management, improve system operational readiness, and accelerate the completion of main power plant maintenance,” Qodari said.
According to him, these measures not only accelerate the recovery of the electricity system in Java following the disruption but also strengthen coordination among stakeholders in maintaining the stability of the electricity supply.
Going forward, the government will tighten supervision and risk mitigation across the entire primary energy supply chain, from power plant maintenance planning, reserve energy readiness, to operational coordination among stakeholders.
“The government will continue to strengthen supervision and risk mitigation across the entire primary energy supply chain, from power plant maintenance planning, reserve energy readiness, to operational coordination among stakeholders, so that similar conditions can be prevented as early as possible and the public can continue to receive stable and sustainable electricity services,” he stated.
In the period ahead, an additional power generation capacity of 69.5 gigawatts (GW) is planned. Of this, 42.6 GW, or approximately 61 percent, will come from new and renewable energy sources.
Energy storage systems, such as batteries and pumped storage hydropower plants, will contribute a capacity of 10.3 GW, or around 15 percent.
“Meanwhile, fossil fuel power plants totalling 16.6 GW, or 24 percent, will be dominated by gas-fired power plants to maintain system flexibility and reliability,” Qodari said.
The policy is regulated under Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree Number 257.K/EK.01/MEM.E/2026 concerning the Mandatory Blending of Biodiesel-Type Biofuel with Diesel Fuel Oil at 50 Percent within the Financing Framework by the Plantation Fund Management Agency, enacted on 17 June 2026.
The implementation of B50 is scheduled to be launched by President Prabowo Subianto in early July 2026.
“This development direction is part of the energy transition roadmap to increase the renewable energy mix, strengthen the flexibility of the power system, gradually reduce dependence on fossil energy, support the green economy, and achieve the Net Zero Emissions target in line with government policy,” he said.
